My Summer Internship at MOIRA
Hi everyone, my name is Mika and I am the Summer Intern at MOIRA for 2021. As my internship draws to a close, I wanted to reflect on my time here and share what I have learned from the team at MOIRA.
I initially applied for MOIRA’s Summer Internship Program to not only learn technical skills but to gain insight into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and experience working in a not-for-profit environment. Before starting the internship, I had no exposure to the NDIS and was hoping to learn about the scheme, the types of supports involved, and the stories of participants within the disability community.
During my time at MOIRA, I have been able to get first-hand NDIS experience as well as improve on my teamwork, communication, networking and technical skills. I have learned how important ‘choice’ is and why MOIRA place it at the centre of the work they do for the participants and families they work with.
Although I was predominantly working within the Financial Plan Management team, it was inspiring for me to learn about all the different supports MOIRA provide, including Your Journey’s work with young people and MOIRA Community’s support for unpaid carers of people living with disability. I have learned that, as an organisation, MOIRA places compassion, respect, and dignity at the heart of everything they do, and these values translate into the quality and professionalism of their services. This also extends to the individuals that make up the MOIRA team.
Every single person that I have had the opportunity to meet and work alongside has been kind, helpful and patient with me as I navigated new systems and processes. In particular, the leadership team have been incredibly approachable and supportive throughout my internship and this has made my experience very positive.
I have valued my time at MOIRA and the people I have met and am excited to use what I have learned in future roles. I have two years left of my degree and am hoping to continue to work in not-for-profit organisations in some capacity after my studies. For those studying or interested in internships, I would highly recommend working with not-for-profit organisations such as MOIRA.
It is a great opportunity to not only gain technical skills and business acumen, but also learn about the needs of different communities, and experience first-hand the impact these organisations have on individuals and their families. For me, working at MOIRA has been incredibly rewarding and I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone at MOIRA and wish you all the best for the future.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mika for all her hard work, passion and dedication. We wish Mika all the very best with her future endeavours.
