Private Rental Training- Supporting the needs of our young people

Navigating the private rental system can be a difficult and frustrating experience, especially for those living on their own- which is the case for many of the young people we support.

To better equip our young people, Your Journey held a private rental training last month. The group of attendees consisted of 13 young people who are either current or future recipients of HAP or Homestretch programs, which provides financial assistance by subsiding the young people’s rent.

Catherine Currie, Coordinator of the ‘Tenancy Assistance & Advocacy Program’, delivered the training which educated our young people on their rights and responsibilities as tenants, including:

• Types of leases and agreements
• Payments
• Protection of belongings
• Repair requests
• Heating and smoke alarm requirements
• Notices to vacate and blacklisting

Everyone who attended received a private rental information pack, which included smoke alarm batteries, information about contents insurance and consumer affairs, private rental guide, staying safe hand out and a fire safety guide.

This training was extremely beneficial and equipped our young people with the skills to confidently navigate the private rental space. Those who attended the session found the training informative and benefited from learning about their legal rights and the resources they have access to.

Plans are underway to run similar training sessions as MOIRA continues to innovate new ways to best support the needs of our young people.
